MIT is renowned for its outstanding technology-based innovations. Over the years, its faculty members and R&D teams, spread over 5 colleges, 21 departments, and more than 100 laboratories have produced 77 Nobel Prize winners and authorized countless patents. In addition to promoting academic research, MIT is proud of its entrepreneurial spirit and tradition of maintaining solid relationships with industry communities. According to a survey conducted by the Kauffman Foundation, as of February 2009, MIT alumni have founded more than 25,800 companies, creating over 3.3 million employment opportunities and generating over US$2 trillion in annual revenues.

The MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) was established in 1948 after the US government green-lighted corporate commercialization of research projects contracted through MIT during World War II. In 1993, a collaboration between MIT and the Epoch Foundation, the Epoch–MIT ILP, was established, and has henceforth introduced various cutting-edge technologies, resources for product development and innovative ideas in technology and management to 20 of Taiwan's leading corporations. Through these efforts, the program has become an important resource and portal through which company members can gain insight into global R&D and market trends and forge a network with its international counterparts. In the exchange, 400 company member representatives have visited MIT. In addition, hundreds of symposia have been held in various regions.  All of these numbers are still growing.

By participating in the Epoch–MIT ILP, company members can obtain first-hand information from the ILP Knowledge Base, treat the 150 MIT laboratories as their external partners and think tanks and access the latest information in the international R&D field; all of which is greatly beneficial to product development and R&D and further leads the way to future innovation .
