Sloan Asia Trek
In order to better understand the increasingly obvious trend
of globalization in the greater China region, in particular,
the coexistence of competition and cooperation among economies
in this region, the MIT Sloan School of Management has been
sending its expedition to Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan
since 2002. In January 2005, the MIT Sloan AsiaTrek, its expedition
consisting of more than 20 MBA representatives, visited BenQ,
Delta Electronics, and some other companies in Taiwan. |

"Taiwan
as an Asia Pacific Operations Center" Conference 2004
(I): Commoditization and Marketing in Global Competition
Epoch Foundation, the Industrial Development Bureau of the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Chung Hua Institution for
Economic Research held the first forum session of Taiwan as
an Asia Pacific Operations Center 2004:
Henry Weil, President of Weil & Company, Inc. and also
a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management, spoke
about strategies for the success of international marketing,
sharing his years of hands-on experience and research findings
of commoditization and marketing, R&D investment and innovation,
and organization structures and innovation. Also invited were
Ralph Liu, EVP of APAC Region, Trend Micro Inc., and Eric
Chen, President, Chinatrust Commercial Financial Bank, as
participating speakers to share with 240 forum attendees their
marketing experience and key strategies for global market
competition.
Epoch-ILP member company visit:
Henry Weil visited Quanta Computer to discuss global marketing
issues with the senior executives.

"Taiwan
as an Asia Pacific Operations Center" Conference 2004
(II): Global R&D Strategies for Multinational Enterprises
Epoch Foundation, the Industrial Development Bureau of the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Chung Hua Institution for
Economic Research held the second forum session of Taiwan
as an Asia Pacific Operations Center 2004:
The second forum session titled "Global R&D Strategies
of Multinational Enterprises" invited Prof. Dick Yue,
Associate Dean of the MIT School of Engineering, as the
host. Ted Chang, Executive Assistant to Chairman, and Senior
Director of Research Center & Intellectual Property
Team of President's Office, Quanta Computer and Head of
Future Convergence Group, Digital Media R&D Center,
Samsung Electronics, and Felix Ho, Vice President, Business
Integration, Yuen Foong Yu Paper Mfg. Co. were also present
to share with 205 attendees their strategies for global
R&D. After this session, Prof. Dick Yue had dinner with
Epoch Foundation sponsors and friends from local business
communities.
"Asia Industrial and Economic Roundtable"
and "Open World Initiative Forum"
There were two sessions of this forum held jointly by the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, Epoch Foundation, China Development
Industrial Bank, and The Evian Group, a renowned European
think tank advocating market economy and free trade. Speakers
for this forum included Jean-Pierre Lehmann, founder and
Executive Director of The Evian Group and a professor of
the International Institute for Management Development (IMD),
Guy de Jonquieres, World Trade Editor, Financial Times,
Prof. William Fischer of IMD, Luzius Wasescha, Ambassador,
Director General for World Trade, and State Secretariat
for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, Bruce Stokes, the Council
on Foreign Relations; Columnist, National Journal, Marc
Laperrouza, Deputy Director, the Evian Group; Doctoral Candidate,
and Valerie Engammare, Research Fellow, Evian Group. They
shared their insights into global developments and regional
economy trends. Opinion leaders from academia, business
communities, and the government in Taiwan were also invited;
together they probed into the economy and trade strategies
of Taiwan and major economies in East Asia in the context
of gloal and Asian economical and political developments.
There were 80 participants at each session.

Young Entrepreneurs of the Future (YEF)-Campus Roadshow
As the robust entrepreneurship in Taiwan is only second
to that in Silicon Valley, the Epoch Foundation, with the
collaboration of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Sloan School of Management, the Industrial Development Bureau
(IDB) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Industrial
Technology Research Institute (ITRI), has developed the
project named "Young Entrepreneurs of the Future(YEF)"
to encourage entrepreneurship among the young people. The
campus roadshow was arranged to help students understand
YEF program, and taken place at National Chengchi University,
National Chiao Tung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University,
and National Taiwan University..

"Epoch-ILP
Seminar: "Identifying Disruptive Technologies in a Disruptive
World"
Prof. Charles Cooney, Faculty Director of the MIT Deshpande
Center for Technological Innovation, was invited to Taiwan
to conduct an interactive seminar and provided in-depth sharing
of the latest innovation management at MIT as well as market-oriented
innovation applications in IT, communications, biochemistry,
and nanotechnology at the Deshpande Center. Using the Center's
portfolio of over 30 projects, Charlie described the evolving
approach we are using to meet this challenge of converting
ideas to new business opportunities. 120 people participated
in this seminar.

Conference 2004 (III): Financing Strategies of Multinational
Enterprises
Epoch Foundation, the Industrial Development Bureau of the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Chung Hua Institution
for Economic Research held the third forum session of Financing
Strategies of Multinational Enterprises invited Y. T. Du,
Chairman of Solomon Smith Barney Taiwan, Will Wang of the
Ho Tung Group, Peter Curz, Founder of Insight Pacific, C.
Y. Huang, President of Investment Banking-Greater China
Market, Polaris Financial Group, Edward Tsai, Partner of
KPMG, and Weiyu Kuo, Associate Professor of the Department
of International Trade, National Chengchi University to
share financing strategies for multinationals with 250 forum
participants.
Young Entrepreneurs of the Future (YEF)─Garage Party
This event to kick off Young Entrepreneurs of the Future
(YEF) was the Garage Party, which invited Dr. Richard Schmalensee,
Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management, to share the
achievements of the MIT $50K Entrepreneurship Competition.
Also, Stan Shih, Chairman of the Acer Group was invited
to share his experiences in startups, as participants in
this program voted him as an icon of entrepreneurship in
Taiwan. Moreover, David Chiou, CTO of Groundhog Technologies,
Michel Chu, CTO of GigaMedia, Gary Ting, Executive Director
of the WI Harper Group, Felix Ho, Vice President of Yuen
Foong Yu, Ken Chen, President of Mercuries Data Systems,
Lu Ming-Feng, Chairman of Targetgen Biotechnologies, Stephen
Chen, Vice Presidentof Compal Communications, ZeKai Hsiau,
President of KCodes, and Ann Lee, Chair of Cultural Cafe,
were present as mentors.

"Taiwan
as an Asia Pacific Operations Center" Conference 2004
(IV): Challenges of Transnational Operations of the Service
Epoch Foundation, the Industrial Development Bureau of the
Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Chung Hua Institution for
Economic Research held the fourth forum session of Challenges
of Transnational Operations of the Service. This session invited
Wen-Long Chen, President of Nova Design, G. T. Tzeng, Chairman
of Magellan Biotechnology, Ann Lee, Chair of Cultural Cafe,
James Yang, SVP-Publishing of Tom Group, to share their experience
of running lean and agile small service companies as well
as innovating transnational business models.

Vicky Diadiuk, Assistant Director of the MIT Microsystems
Technology Labs, visited Delta Networks, Taiwan Semiconductor
Manufacturing Company, and Winbond Electronics for in-depth
sharing of developments in micro-system technologies with
engineers and senior executives at these companies. Vicky's
talk gave a brief overview of the Microsystems Technology
Labs (MTL) at MIT and include the following research projects
on Silicon devices and technology.
( Young Entrepreneurs of the Future (YEF)─ Elevator Pitch
Competition Eleven teams developed their business plans
with their mentors. Judges for the competition were Prof.
Wen Chao-tung of Graduate Institute of Technology and Innovation
of National Chengchi University, Prof. Sophia Shing of National
Chiao Tung University, Jen-Diann Chiou, President of Intumit,
Herb C. H. Wu, Chairman of Genius Way, S. M. Tzeng, Vice
President of China Development Financial Holding Corp.,
Joseph Tzeng, Managing Director of Crystal Ventures, Peter
Yuan, President of Grand Capital Group. They selected six
best teams based on their management strategies, technologies
or services, market potential, and teamwork.

Sixty students with enthusiasm and potential in innovation
and entrepreneurship were selected and gathered with well-known
innovation forerunners and entrepreneurs for the sharing
of their innovation views, business startup experience,

"Epoch-ILP
Seminar: "Building an Intelligent Infrastructure"
This talk described the conception, history and status of
the Auto-ID Center, a unique partnership among over 100 global
companies and five of the world's leading research centers.
The work in the Auto-ID Center created the fundamental components
of this new infrastructure, including radio frequency identification
(RFID) architecture, a common identification protocol - the
Electronic Product Code (EPC), a networking system - the Object
Name Service (ONS) and a Product Markup Language (PML). 100
people participated in this seminar.

Young Entrepreneurs of the Future - Overseas Visit
Young Entrepreneurs of the Future - Overseas Visit was a
two-week trip to the places representing the most entrepreneurial
communities in the states. The visit focused on Silicon
Valley on West Coast and Boston on East Coast, including
20 companies and organizations, such as Stanford University,
its Center for Integrated System, MIT, its Computer Science
and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Media Laboratory,
and companies globally renowned for their innovation, such
as iRobot, Juniper Networks, Tapwave, Ember, and E-ink.
In addition, Prof. Lester C. Thurow and Prof. Yasheng Huang
respectively lectured on New Business Models for Today's
Global Economy and Institution and Growth: China and India.

Epoch Foundation Visit to MIT:
(For Epoch donors and Epoch-ILP member companies only)
This biannual trip to MIT, tailor-made by MIT for Taiwan Members,
successfully concluded in October. Themed Challenges in Times
of Change, this trip invited company leaders and senior executives
from the member companies to have a first-hand experience
of major management and technology trends at present as well
as the latest MIT R&D achievements.
During the intensive trip of one week, 50 representatives
from Taiwan companies visited the MIT Computer Science and
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Media Laboratory. They
were particularly interested in value chain management, display
technologies, and broadband networks, which are the areas
critical to Taiwan's global competitiveness. They also met
with Prof. Lester Thurow and other MIT scholars to discuss
emerging business models under globalization and the rise
of China and India. This was a refreshing, fruitful trip for
these business leaders and senior executives away from school
for a long time.
This one-week program introduced new methods for:
leveraging current technologies to develop new products
and other lines of business
understanding changes in technology and industry structure
positioning your organization for the next wave of technological
innovation
adopting and leveraging new and disruptive technologies
incorporating innovations into your organization's everyday
activities
understanding the long-term, organization-wide consequences
of different policies and decisions
engaging your organization in new, expanded, and more profitable
markets

Entrepreneurship Workshops and Wrap-up Presentation
Successful entrepreneurs, venture capital practitioners, and
professors were invited to lecture on Team Building in Start-ups,
Legal Issues for Start-ups, New Product and Venture Development,
Global Marketing for Start-ups, Entrepreneurial Financing,
and Managing Changes that were of lecture participants' interest.
Also, fifteen student representatives from the two-week oversea
visit in September shared what they had learned from the trip. |
